Have you ever heard of Tahitensis Vanilla from Papua Island?

When most people think of Tahitensis or Tahitian vanilla beans, thoughts of French Polynesia and beautiful sunsets in small islands like Tahiti, Bora Bora, and Moorea have come to their mind. While this is true, many people don’t realize that Tahitensis or Tahitian vanilla is also grown in many other regions. The largest producer is on another South Pacific island. Less famous, possibly more remote, and immensely culturally diverse, Papua Island (Papua, Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea), is one of the last frontiers of the old world.  Papua Island is now having power player in the vanilla bean trade and the world’s third-largest exporter of this fragrant delight by productions volume.

Vanilla Tahitian is a species of the vanilla orchid known scientifically as Vanilla Tahitensis, after the island where it was first found, but it is no longer only produced in Tahiti.

Tahitian vanilla, first found and classified as a hybrid vanilla orchid growing in the wild in Tahiti was brought to Papua New Guinea sometime around the 1960s as an agricultural experiment but soon abandoned later to be reborn in the mid-1990s by Allan Bird in the East Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea. The Interest in growing vanilla was thought to be one of the commodities to provide income to rural villages and growing to other cities, provinces with the aim to produce an exportable commodity that could be scaled across the country to these remote villages, cities, and province and then spread to the whole Papua Island with the same aim. The world was also looking for a balance to the Madagascar vanilla trade that has dominated the world vanilla market for many years and since the flooding disaster at Madagascar that makes Papua Island as the balancing to fulfill the vanilla demands from the world market.

Papua Island is now the largest producer of Tahitensis vanilla in the world!
